Derek took a family friend, who currently resides in Southern California, on a tour of the farm today. The friend attended college in McPherson as was familiar with the Kansas landscape but didn’t know a whole lot about the state’s agriculture industry. Derek showed him all aspects of his operation including his fall crops, pivot sprinklers, call at pasture and cattle pens and feeding systems that are used during the winter.
The tour helped show the friend what Kansas agriculture is all about and where, exactly, his food comes from. The friend was familiar with farming but had never been on an operational farm. Showing people how a farm works, how cattle are fed and how crops are grown is part of what today’s agriculture community needs to do to familiarize or re-familiarize people with farming. The more people know about farming, the more supportive they will be of their agriculture community and the agriculture industry as a whole.
